People looking for work are often targeted by scammers who promise a job and then ask for money. The good news: most fake offers follow the same pattern, so they are easy to spot once you know what to look for.

You never pay to get a job.

Not to register, apply, be interviewed or start work. Helpers never pay on Helpers Connect.

Warning signs

Be careful if anyone:

  • asks for a registration, application or "admin" fee
  • asks you to pay for training, a uniform or a medical check before you start
  • wants a deposit to "secure" or "hold" the job for you
  • pressures you to decide or pay today
  • won't tell you their full name or where the job is
  • asks for your bank PIN, a one-time code or a photo of your bank card
  • offers pay that is much higher than usual, with very few details about the work

One of these on its own is enough reason to stop and check. Two or more is almost always a scam.

Before you go to an interview

  1. Ask for the household's name, the address and a contact number before the day.
  2. Tell a friend or family member where you are going and when you expect to be back, and share your location with them if you can.
  3. Go during the day, and keep your phone charged.
  4. Take money for your own transport, but never pay the employer anything.
  5. If something feels wrong when you arrive, you can leave. A real employer will understand.
