Safer conversations and hiring

Before a meeting

• Talk first by phone or video and agree the purpose, time and public or otherwise comfortable meeting place.
• Tell someone you trust where you are going and when you expect to be back. Helpers should consider bringing a trusted person to an initial meeting if that feels safer.
• Discuss the actual duties, household, location, hours, pay and start date. Do not feel pressured to accept an offer immediately.

Protect personal information and money

• Share only information needed for the next step. Avoid posting identity numbers, full home addresses, banking details or children's personal information in a public profile or message.
• Do not pay a fee, deposit, training charge or equipment charge to access a job through Helpers Connect. Helpers can report a fee request.
• Employers should not ask for money or sensitive financial information as a condition of a first conversation. Use a lawful, transparent process for any checks.

For employers

• Ask permission before contacting references or requesting optional professional screening. Explain what you need and who will see the result.
• Confirm the work arrangements in writing before work starts, and pay the helper directly as agreed.
• A verified phone number, reference or optional screening result is only one piece of information. It is not a safety guarantee.

If something feels wrong

End the conversation if you feel pressured or unsafe. Save relevant messages, avoid confronting the other person alone, and use the appropriate local emergency service if anyone is in immediate danger. Report platform-related fee requests or conduct through Helpers Connect.
